Marblehead is a midsized coastal town located in Essex County, Massachusetts. With roots in both commercial fishing and yachting, Marblehead is the birthplace of the American Navy and a popular yachting destination.
America’s best preserved historic town was first settled in 1629 on the shore near what is now Bradlee Road. Mayflower Pilgrim Isaac Allerton landed in the area that would later become the town proper some three years earlier to establish a small fishing village. Much later, a large percentage of residents became involved in the struggle that would eventually evolve into the Revolutionary War. The first vessel commissioned for the navy, the Hannah, was built in Marblehead and crewed primarily by a crew that called the town home.
Modern day Marblehead is a quiet community that offers residents quaint streets lined with historic 17th and 18th century homes. The town prides itself on its history of sailing, calling itself “The Yachting Capital of the World.” Residents take this claim seriously, with fewer than 20,000 residents it is home to five yacht clubs and has produced numerous world class sailors. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find residents sailing in Marblehead Harbor in the dead of winter, something they call “frostbiting.”
For those who prefer landside activities, Marblehead offers excellent dining, boutique shopping, pretty seaside strolls and many historic landmarks. With commuter rail access and only 15 miles from Boston, residents are never very far from something to do.
Points of interest in the town include Devereux Beach, Castle Rock Park, Crocker Park, Crowninshield Island, Herreshoff Castle, Marblehead Lighthouse, Marblehead Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and the Pleon Yacht club, the oldest junior yacht club in the United States.
